Pool Electrical Safety and Bonding

Pool electrical safety comes down to two related ideas: bonding (connecting metal components so they stay at the same electrical potential) and GFCI protection (cutting power fast if current leaks somewhere it shouldn't). This site is dedicated to a single build method: gunite (shotcrete) construction, rebar cage, sprayed and hand-finished concrete, engineered bond beams, and a design that can be shaped to anything the lot allows, from tanning ledges to negative edges to integrated spas.

What Bonding Actually Does

Bonding connects metal pool components, ladders, light niches, rebar in the shell, equipment, with a continuous conductor so that if a stray electrical current reaches any one of them, it does not create a dangerous voltage difference between components a swimmer might touch. This is a code-required part of pool construction, not an optional upgrade.

What GFCI Protection Adds

Ground-fault circuit interrupters detect even small current leaks (far smaller than a standard breaker would catch) and cut power within a fraction of a second, which is the standard protection for pool pumps, lighting, and any electrical outlet near the water. Pool equipment electrical work, bonding grids, GFCI circuits, and any wiring near the water, is licensed electrical work, not a DIY project, and is inspected as part of the permitting process on new construction for exactly this reason.
